Lake District walker from Leeds injured after ice slip

A walker injured when he slipped on ice in the Lake District was winched to safety by an RAF helicopter.

Mountain rescue teams were sent to the high level traverse between Robinson's Cairn and Looking Stead after the man hit his head during the fall.

The man, in his 40s and from the Leeds area, was flown to Whitehaven Hospital after the Saturday evening accident. His current condition is not known.

A Sea King from RAF Valley was used in the rescue.

'Excellent flying'

Chris Cookson, from Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team (MRT), said the RAF crew had proved crucial.

"If they hadn't been able to winch the casualty up it would have been quite a long evacuation for us," he said.

"It was excellent flying from the RAF."

Fifteen members of Cockermouth MRT attended along with 14 from Wasdale MRT.
