St Bride's Church appeals to trace unmarked graves

A Cumbrian church is appealing for help to find out more information about unmarked graves in the churchyard as it faces problems with burial space.

St Bride's Church in Kirkbride is running out of space for graves and cannot extend the land any further as it is on a protected Roman fort site.

Now the church is appealing for people to come forward if they have relatives buried in unmarked areas at the site.

Churchwarden Arnold Kyrke said they were faced with a "dilemma".

He said: "It's a problem we've been aware of for a few years now.

"We have in the past put out informers in the local community to see whether anybody would be willing to sell us a plot of land, but unfortunately we've had no luck in that respect."

The church is looking into the option of reusing land that has had no burials in more than 100 years, but they need to confirm there are no unmarked graves on the land.

If the church does reuse the land, a consultation process will take place and permission from the diocese will have to be granted.
