Cumbria jobs hope from Britain's Energy Coast cash

Businesses in Cumbria have been invited to bid for grants from a £6.6m funding pot in a move aimed at safeguarding or creating more than 1,000 jobs.

The "investing in Britain" programme has been launched by public private partnership Britain's Energy Coast.

It is aimed at manufacturing, processing and engineering companies, especially those in the nuclear and renewable energy supply chain.

Tourist attractions are also eligible. Firms must apply before September 2013.

'Capitalise on opportunities'

The move follows a successful bid to the government's regional growth fund, and financial support from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

Britain's Energy Coast aims "to lead the transition of west Cumbria into economy that will flourish in a low carbon future".

David Jones, from the organisation, said it sent out a clear message that the area was "open for business".

He added: "This area is facing unprecedented levels of investment in the energy sector so it is important we are able to help our businesses and newcomers to capitalise on the opportunities this will create."
