Tour of Britain: Carlisle to Blackpool in fourth stage

Stage four of the Tour of Britain started in Carlisle and finished in Blackpool

Cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish were among the riders taking part in the Cumbria leg of the Tour of Britain.

The race began in Ipswich on Sunday and stage four, a 156km (97 miles) trek, ran from Carlisle to Blackpool.

Hundreds of people turned up in Carlisle, asked for autographs and cheered on the competitors.

Mark Cavendish won the stage and became overall leader of the tour after his second successive stage win.

Stage four began in Carlisle at 11:00 BST and passed the castle before heading south onto the A6 and through Penrith.

The first sprint took place in Shap, followed by the first King of the Mountains climb at Shap Fell.

The route then went through Kendal, Oxenholme and Kirkby Lonsdale before moving into Lancashire and to Caton for the final sprint.

The day finished at about 14:30 BST in Blackpool near to the town's famous tower.
