Arsonists caused more than £10,000 damage to a restaurant in Cumbria when they set fire to a wheelie bin.

The fire on Saturday morning damaged equipment on a wall of the Old Keswickian chip shop in Market Place, Keswick.

It follows a number of other fires in bins across the town in the last week.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said: "One of the bins was situated close to a property and subsequently damage in excess of £10,000 was caused."

Part of the downstairs dining area has been closed while repairs to electrical equipment are carried out.

Restaurant owner Alan Simpson said: "How people can get a kick out of this is beyond me.

"They didn't know that somebody could have been in a flat above the premises

"Had the fire service not been as prompt as they were and extinguish the blaze you could be looking at murder."
