The son of an elderly couple who died when their car plunged into a stream in Cumbria has spoken about his loss.

Alan Murray, 73 of Scattergate Crescent in Appleby and his wife Barbara Murray, 74, were travelling towards Appleby at about 15:30 BST on Saturday.

The vehicle left the road, travelled down an embankment and turned upside down in a beck beneath the road. The couple were declared dead at the scene.

Steve Murray, their eldest son, said dealing with the loss was "painful".

He said: "We are all truly shocked and terribly upset by the tragic event on Saturday taking mum and dad away from us; as well as grandparents and great-grandparents from our children.

"It is hard to come to terms with something so shocking and painful. We thank family and friends for their support and such a difficult time."

Firefighters found the car upside down in Hoff Beck, near Appleby.

Cumbria Police are appealing for witnesses.
