Windermere Great North Swim postponed due to rain

In 2011 10,000 swimmers took part in the event

The Great North Swim at Windermere in Cumbria has been postponed due to strong winds and heavy rain.

About 900 people were set to take part in the two-mile swim on Friday, and this has now been moved to Sunday, weather permitting.

A one-mile event on Saturday has now been cancelled.

Organisers Nova International said the wind would affect the operation of the safety kayakers and also make swimming conditions extremely challenging.

David Hart, of Nova International, added that it would be irresponsible for it to go ahead, and they would rather disappoint people than put them at risk.

A full refund will be offered to those unable to take part.

The weather has also led to the cancellation of horse trials at Hutton-in-the-Forest, near Penrith.

Cumbria Police has advised residents and visitors to take care and not attempt to drive through flood waters.

Anyone planning to visit the Lake District fells is also warned to make sure they are properly equipped.
