Businesses have been allowed to return following a gas leak in a Cumbrian town.

Engineers have been at Murray Road, in Workington, since Tuesday when the leak was discovered.

A number of properties in the area were evacuated but everyone has now been allowed to return.

Northern Gas Networks said repairs were now being made to the road with the work possibly lasting into the weekend.

A Northern Gas Networks spokesperson said: "We'd like to thank traders, shoppers and local residents for their patience throughout this incident. They have been tremendously understanding.

"We are now working to backfill the holes and reopen the road as quickly as possible."
