Plans to close Captain Shaw's School to be reviewed

Plans to shut Cumbria's smallest school - which has just 16 pupils - are to be reconsidered.

Captain Shaw's Primary School in Bootle was due to close in August after the county council said it was not "financially viable".

But an all-party group of Copeland Borough councillors complained about the move and the council said it would reconsider the plan.

Councillors had complained the plans were "short-sighted".

Keith Hitchen, ward councillor for Bootle with Copeland Borough Council, said: "The people of Bootle are angry and dismayed at the proposed closure of the school, which is a thriving community hub at the heart of the village.

"It is short-sighted and narrow-minded."

A county council spokesman confirmed the decision to close the school could not be "implemented" until objections raised by councillors had been discussed.

If the school does eventually close, pupils will move to nearby Waberthwaite School.

A council scrutiny committee will meet on 6 February to decide on the closure.
