Motorists heading north in Cumbria faced lengthy delays following a crash on the M6 near Carlisle.
Part of the road between junctions 42 and 43 was closed for a time but was reopened shortly after 13:00 BST except for one lane in each direction.
At one stage traffic heading north was queuing for about four miles (6.4km), beyond Southwaite service station.
A lorry driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries after hitting the central reservation at about 07:00 BST.
Traffic heading north was diverted off the M6 and through the outskirts of Carlisle.
The lorry was carrying plastic and glass bottles, which ended up on the carriageway.
One car punctured all four tyres as a result of the debris.
