New £31,000 lifeboat officially named in Cumbria

Vision of Tamworth The new lifeboat went into service last September and has already been used on three rescue launches

A new £31,000 lifeboat is to be officially named at a ceremony in Barrow, Cumbria.

The Vision of Tamworth is the newest RNLI lifeboat for Cumbria.

About 200 people, including volunteers and supporters from the Staffordshire town which funded the vessel, are due to attend the ceremony on Saturday.

The Tamworth RNLI branch appeal raised £47,000 to cover the boat and its maintenance costs.

Former Tamworth branch chairman Eve Jones will name the lifeboat and current chairman Jill Brown will formally hand the vessel over to Barrow RNLI Lifeboat operations manager David Green.

Second lifeboat

Mrs Jones said: "We are all delighted to be able to visit the lifeboat station, meet the crew and see the lifeboat in action.

"This is the second Barrow lifeboat which has been provided by the people of Tamworth and we are immensely proud of the connection we now have with this vital lifesaving service on the Cumbrian coast."

The new lifeboat went into service last September and has already been used on three rescue launches.

She replaced the station's former D class, Spirit of Tamworth, and operates alongside Barrow's all-weather lifeboat, Grace Dixon.
