Burglary suspect impaled on spikes in Coventry

A suspected burglar impaled himself on railings as he tried to run away from the crime scene, police have said.

A member of the public called 999 in the early hours of Friday morning to report intruders in his garden in the Stoke area of Coventry, West Midlands.

A man was found lying on the street in Swan Lane bleeding from puncture wounds in his leg and surrounded by shards of glass, said officers.

West Midlands Police carried out first aid and called an ambulance.

The 29-year-old man from Walsgrave was taken to hospital and will later be spoken to about the attempted burglary.

Ch Supt Andy Nicholson said: "Enquiries revealed blood on spiked fencing nearby and a broken sky-light at a convenience store believed to have been smashed by prowlers trying to access a first floor window."
