Woman sexually assaulted in Coventry on New Year's Day

A 41-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the early hours of New Year's Day.

The woman was grabbed as she walked by an embankment on the outskirts of Coventry sometime between 03:00 and 04:00 GMT.

The incident happened near to the roundabout at Gosford Street and Sky Blue Way, West Midlands Police said.

The offender was described as an Asian man, aged between 30 and 50 and about 5ft 7in tall.

'Isolated incident'

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the man or a silver or grey saloon vehicle near the scene at the time of the attack to contact the force.

Det Ch Insp Dean Young said: "We believe this to be an isolated incident and we are anxious to hear from anyone who may have seen this vehicle to contact us or anyone who may have information about the attack to come forward.

"We believe there will have been people around the outskirts of the city centre who were on their way home after celebrating the new year."

Mr Young said officers were studying CCTV footage from the area as part their investigation.

Anyone with information should contact Coventry police or call Crimestoppers.
