Domestic abuse helpline open for Christmas and New Year

A telephone helpline for people suffering domestic abuse in Warwickshire will be open over the Christmas and new year holidays.

The helpline, run by the police and county council, will be open between 08:00 and 20:00 GMT every day.

The number for help and advice for people affected or their families and friends is 0800 408 1552.

Sarah Simpkins, of the helpline, said outside those hours, a national number was available.

"After the hours of 8pm we will be able to leave a national number for people to contact so people are not left without someone to talk to which is really important," she said.

Police say the numbers of attacks across the country often rise at Christmas because of stress and people drinking more alcohol.

Last month, Warwickshire County Council's domestic abuse manager Sue Ingram said more than 8,000 incidents of domestic abuse were reported in the county in the last year - which was the equivalent of one in six people in Warwickshire.

"These are shocking figures which we hope will bring home just how serious the problem is," she said.
