Police's 999 call-handling over Coventry woman's death probed

An investigation has been launched into the way West Midlands Police handled a number of emergency calls relating to a woman who was later found dead.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it is looking into steps taken by the force after 999 calls about Janet Dignan, aged 56.

Ms Dignan was reported missing by staff at Hawkesbury Lodge in Coventry on 19 February and found dead on 22 February.

West Midlands Police said it is co-operating fully with investigators.

'Vulnerable' woman

IPCC commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said: "This is a very sad case where a patient had voluntarily signed up to a treatment programme at a residential home.

"Staff had informed the police that the woman was vulnerable, required medication and that they were worried about her welfare and whereabouts.

"Police managed to make contact with the woman on her mobile phone but police logs indicate that she told them that she was safe, did not intend to harm herself, nor return to the home or reveal her whereabouts."

The IPCC said the investigation will include a review of the extent to which the police followed both national and force policies.
