Coventry Cathedral architect in Royal Mail stamp set

Sir Basil Spence is one of 10 British figures to be featured in the Royal Mail stamp set

The architect of Coventry Cathedral has been included in a set of Royal Mail stamps celebrating British figures.

Sir Basil Spence designed the cathedral after much of St Michael's was destroyed by bombs in World War II.

Dean of Coventry Rev John Irvine said: "Including Spence will remind people what a treasure they have."

The Britons of Distinction set also features mathematician and Enigma code breaker Alan Turing and wartime secret agent Odette Hallowes.

Social reformer Joan Mary Fry, opera star Kathleen Ferrier, composer Frederick Delius, artist Mary 'May' Morris and author and scholar Montague Rhodes James are included.

Mr Spence also designed the British Embassy in Rome, the barracks alongside Hyde Park in London and high-rise housing in Glasgow.

Coventry Cathedral is marking its 50th anniversary this year.
