Stratford-upon-Avon cinema plans prompt concerns

Plans for a cinema complex in Stratford-upon-Avon have caused concern about the future of its current cinema.

London and Regional Properties has applied to build the five-screen cinema as part of a revamp of the Town Square.

The manager of the two-screen Picturehouse said it could face closure if the plan was approved.

Stratfordward BID, a company representing 500 businesses in the town, said it was "cautiously supportive" of the proposal.

'Big worry'

Carina Volkes is the manager of the Picturehouse: "Obviously we're concerned about the effect.

"We came into this community when there was no cinema so we feel we're a very important part of it.

"To feel that might be threatened is a big a worry for us."

The plans submitted to Stratford-upon-Avon's Town Council include an 850-seat cinema, shops, restaurants and cafes.

A decision is due to be made by the council next month.

Chris Gregory from Stratfordward BID said: "We're pro competition so on balance we've agreed to support it, we just think it's a shame the cinema in the town [is not] likely to be part of the development.

"We're almost certain the Picturehouse will be forced out of business."
