Teachers on strike at Coventry's Tile Hill Wood School

A group of teachers at a Coventry school is taking strike action over plans to grant the school academy status.

Sixteen teachers at Tile Hill Wood School are walking out, although head teacher Gina O'Connor said the school would remain open.

Teacher Jane Nellist said there had not been enough consultation.

Ms O'Connor said governors had consulted with teachers and a decision had not yet been taken.

Consultations are also being held with the wider community, she said.

"Becoming an academy school does not mean we are becoming independent, we just get our resources in a different way which means we can spend them more autonomously," Ms O'Connor explained.

The school employs 100 teachers.
