A dairy company will close a Cornish depot with the loss of almost 60 jobs, it has announced.

Muller Wiseman Dairies at Pensilva near Liskeard will close as a result of a reduction in demand for milk supplied from the depot.

It is unclear when the plant will close, but 58 posts will be affected.

The company said the closure would not affect customers or dairy farmers and distribution would be transferred to the depot in Bridgwater, Somerset.

The firm said the decline in demand for milk from the depot was due to big customers managing distribution themselves.

Managing director Carl Ravenhall said: "The whole team, together with union representatives worked extremely hard to find ways of addressing the challenges facing this depot, but unfortunately we have been unable to establish an economic basis for continuing to distribute milk from Pensilva.

"Our priority is to support those who are affected by this decision and we will be working with local agencies to ensure that each individual has access to the services which are available. "
