A body recovered from a clay pit in Cornwall is that of a man who has been missing for more than six years, police have confirmed.

Nicholas Prouse was in his early 50s when he went missing from his home in St Dennis on 30 November 2007.

A missing person inquiry was launched but he was never located. No reason for his disappearance was ever established.

Mr Prouse's next of kin had been made aware and had requested privacy, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

Divers recovered the body from Trelavour Pit, St Dennis on 13 April after it was spotted by a member of the public.

Det Sgt Steve Reid said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this time as this brings to an end many years of uncertainty with regards to the whereabouts of Mr Prouse.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and police will work with the coroner's office to establish the facts surrounding his death."
