Cornwall Council gritter deployment caught out by freeze

Cornwall highways bosses have admitted being caught out by cold weather, which resulted in gritting being delayed.

Temperatures fell to 0C (32F) across parts of the county.

Cornwall Council said it was a sudden change, meaning many roads had not been gritted beforehand.

The authority added it initially managed to get five gritters out on Monday morning, but it was unable to mobilise its whole fleet until later.

Nineteen road collisions were reported across the county on Monday morning.

Ice was reported on roads including the A390 from Truro to Liskeard, routes between St Austell and Truro, and Falmouth to Truro.

The council does not take its forecasts from the Met Office.
