John Daniel day centre staff charged with neglect

Three former carers have been charged with ill-treating and neglecting people with learning difficulties.

The charges relate to the John Daniel Day Care Centre in Penzance.

Benjamin Jenkins, 22, from St Ives, Philip Sowden, 59, from Penzance, and Christine Keller, 57, from Hayle, were bailed to appear before magistrates in Truro on 21 February.

Devon and Cornwall Police said two other people arrested on suspicion of neglect were released without charge.

Mr Jenkins and Mr Sowden have both been charged with two counts of a carer ill-treating and wilfully neglecting a person without capacity contrary to the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Ms Keller faces one count of the same charge.

The centre caters for more than 80 people with learning difficulties, providing on-site and off-site activities and the charges cover a period from April 2007 to December 2011.
