Tall ships will return to Cornwall as part of a regatta in September 2014.

More than 20 ships will sail from Greenwich to Falmouth for the Iberian Tall Ships Regatta before sailing on to either France or Spain.

The race will also provide sailing opportunities for up to 70 young people from the county to crew the ships.

In 2008 Falmouth hosted the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta which brought more than 100,000 people to the town and generated £12m for the local economy.

'Prestigious race'

John Hick, from Falmouth Tall Ships Association, said: "It will start in Greenwich and then they will go down the Thames and out into the Dover Strait, down the channel and then come down to Falmouth.

"We are delighted to be chosen to be part of this prestigious race."

Councillor Joan Symons from Cornwall Council added it would put Falmouth and Cornwall at the "forefront of national and international media attention".

Dates for the regatta will be finalised when all the ports have been selected and the race course determined.
