Centres 'closed' to volunteers

Help

A volunteer recruitment organisation in Cornwall has had to close its doors to the public every Friday and each lunch-time after the government changed the way it operated some of its contracts.

Volunteer Cornwall, which recruits and places 1,000 volunteers each year, said it was forced to move from being a main provider of the government's Work Programme to a sub-contractor.

It said that resulted in a loss of just under £90,000 in funding, leaving it with no choice but to make four people redundant and to reduce its opening hours just to keep up with the paperwork.
