Two teenagers have been detained for an arson attack on a Cornish school.

James Dent and Christopher Jenkins were sentenced to five years at a young offenders' institution.

The 18-year-olds, who were 17 at the time of the arson attack, caused damage of more than £1m at Treviglas Community College, Newquay, in January 2011.

Dent, of Ellenglaze Court, Crantock, and Jenkins, of Carworgie Court, St Columb Road, Newquay, were sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court.

Burglary charge

They were found guilty of arson with intent to damage or destroy the college in March at Truro Crown Court.

Jenkins was also found guilty of burglary, a charge which Dent had earlier admitted.

Judge Paul Darlow sentenced both men to five years' detention.

More than 40 firefighters were called to the blaze, which damaged three rooms in the maths and science block of the school, which has more than 1,000 pupils aged between 11 and 18. No-one was hurt.
