Porthcurno Telegraph Museum awarded £100,000

The Porthcurno centre was the British hub for international cable communications for 100 years

A museum in Cornwall which celebrates the county's telegraph history has been awarded £100,000.

Porthcurno Telegraph Museum in Penzance was awarded the grant by the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation.

The museum said the money would be used to improve its facilities and develop its Learning Centre which is due to open in 2013.

Porthcurno's telegraph centre was the British hub for international cable communications from 1870-1970.

It was also a training college for the communications industry until 1993.

Henrietta Boex, from the museum, said: "The museum buildings once formed the largest and busiest telegraph cable station in the world.

"We're very proud of our old buildings, but they were not designed for thousands of visitors.

"By sensitively redeveloping them we'll create more space for visitors, exhibitions and events."
