Armed forces honoured in Cornwall

Members of the armed forces have been honoured during an event in Cornwall.

Bodmin hosted the county's Armed Forces Day as a precursor to national celebrations on 30 June.

During the event - featuring bands, exhibitions and military vehicles on show - personnel from the Army, the RAF and the Royal Navy were alongside veterans from various campaigns.

The event was held on the same day Cornwall Council signed an armed forces covenant.

D-Day veteran Harold Vanderwolfe, who was 19 when he took part in the World War II beach landings on 6 June 1944, said the Bodmin event helped remind people of current, as well as past global conflicts.

He said: "I think it's important that we remember not only the past, but also think about the present and the future, because the future is very uncertain."

The county's new covenant is a commitment by the council and other organisations to help forces members, veterans and their families with issues such as housing, education, healthcare and employment.

On 30 June, Plymouth will lead the national Armed Forces Day celebrations.
