More than 20 jobs will be lost in Cornwall when a country estate closes to the public after attempts to sell it failed.

Trevarno Estate, near Helston, which attracts about 80,000 visitors a year, is due to close on Sunday.

The 750-acre estate, worth an estimated £10m, has been on the market for 18 months and remains for sale.

Many of the 40 staff have already left but a further nine full-time and 12 part-time jobs will go.

A statement said: "Although the gardens will be closed, other branches of the business will continue.

"Whilst there will be a number of jobs lost, there will also be a number of jobs remaining to run the estate, the organic skin care and soap business and administration functions.

"We would be supportive in any way possible should a prospective buyer come forward who wishes to either continue with or reopen the gardens."
