Volunteers sought for Heartlands Project in Cornwall

Volunteers are needed to help manage the public spaces and heritage buildings

As work on the £35m Heartlands Project for Cornwall nears completion volunteers are now being sought.

They are needed to help manage the public open spaces and heritage buildings it has created.

The money has been spent on transforming 19 acres of derelict land in Pool into community space and a World Heritage centre.

The development was made possible with a Big Lottery Fund grant and financial support from Cornwall Council.

The engine at Robinson's Shaft is part of the old South Crofty mine.

As part of the Cornwall Council-led development the Grade II-listed engine is being brought back to service.

Volunteer roles at the Heartlands will involve gardening, visitor services and arts and heritage tours.

Vicky Martin, Chief Executive at Heartlands, said: "From working with unusual plants from across the world in our Diaspora Botanical Gardens, to assisting with exciting events such as festivals and theatre performances, there really is something interesting for everyone."

The Heartlands Project, which is due to open in the spring, will also include a cafe and bar, art and craft studios, botanical gardens and the biggest adventure playground in Cornwall.
