A farewell service has been held at Truro Cathedral for the Bishop of St Germans.

The Right Reverend Roy Screech is retiring at the end of December after 12 years in the post.

The process of deciding a new Bishop of St Germans is now under way but it will be a lengthy process.

The Bishop of St Germans said he was heeding medical advice and taking the opportunity to retire after a total of 35 years as an ordained minister.

Mr Screech was the senior selection secretary of the Ministry Division of the Archbishops' Council before his appointment as Bishop of St Germans was announced in January 2000.

He said: "Twelve years is a very long time. I feel Cornwall has become a special place for me. In one sense I am looking forward to retiring, but there are lots of things to miss and be sad about."

The Bishop of Truro, the Right Reverend Tim Thornton, said the Bishop's departure was great loss.
