The Cornish charity, set up by Dr Murphy in 2001, offers MS patients help with treatments and support to manage their condition.

Other award recipients include John Keast, from St Austell. The former national government adviser on religious education has been appointed OBE for services to education.

Mr Keast said that the honour was an "absolute shock".

He said: "I never expected it ever in my life.

"I'm very pleased and very proud that the area that I work in has been recognised in this way."

Fred Greenslade, from Truro, has become an MBE for services to local government.

Edwin Lello, from Camborne, has been appointed MBE for services to the farming industry.
