A teenage rugby player who died when he fell from cliffs in Newquay had been looking for his wallet after a pub crawl, an inquest heard.

Andrew Curwell, 18, from Saddleworth in Greater Manchester, was with friends on holiday in June 2009 when he lost his wallet.

Deputy Cornwall Coroner Barrie Van den Berg returned a verdict of accidental death at the inquest in Truro.

A few days later another teenager fell to his death from cliffs in the town.

Found on beach

Mr Curwell, a member of Leeds Rhinos rugby league club, had finished his A-levels and gone on holiday with friends from Rishworth School in Halifax.

The group was on a pub crawl when Mr Curwell noticed he had lost his wallet and split up with his friends to look for it.

He fell 150ft (46m) from cliffs near the Trebarwith Hotel and was found on the beach below the next morning.

He was almost two times over the drink drive limit.

Det Con Jarod Yewen, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said Newquay had tightened controls on under-age drinking since the death of Mr Curwell and 16-year-old Paddy Higgins, who also fell from cliffs at Newquay less than a week later.
