Up to 350 homes and a primary school are to be built on the site of an old hospital in Peterborough.

The District Hospital site was sold by the NHS trust for £7.44m in November.

The city council has approved Lands Improvement Holdings' (LIH) plans for the Thorpe Road site despite concerns about additional traffic in the area.

Chris Harper, chair of the planning committee, said traffic calming measures and new signals had been included.

"Of 1,800-plus consultations there were 16 objections so generally it was very much welcomed," he said.

An LIH spokesman said buildings of historic importance on the 23-acre (nine hectares) brownfield site, including the memorial wing of the old hospital, would be retained.

Work is expected to begin in two to three months' time, he said.
