Traveller sites purchase plans considered by council

A council deal to buy three Cambridgeshire traveller sites would avert the need to build more pitches elsewhere, an official said.

South Cambridgeshire District Council hopes to buy the private Fen Road site in Chesterton, as well as two county council sites in Whaddon and Blackwell.

The council said "replacement pitches" would be needed in the county without the "investment".

Cabinet members will consider the proposals on 12 September.

The council said it secured a £500,000 government grant in a joint bid with Cambridge City Council and was bidding for £300,000 more.

The council would spend a further £300,000, which it would hope to recoup in rent.

Under the deal, the authority would own and manage all of the sites, with the city council being able to take rent from one of the Fen Road pitches.

Mark Howell, South Cambridgeshire District Council's cabinet member for housing, said some pitches were in "poor condition".

"Without investment, replacement pitches would be needed elsewhere in the district," he said.

The council is asking for people's views on the proposal.
