First Capital Connect apology after blind man 'blanked'

A train company has apologised after one of its employees "blanked" a blind man at Cambridge railway station.

Journalist Sean Dilley was calling out for help when other travellers told him that a member of staff "walked right past... and ignored you".

Mr Dilley was travelling with his guide dog and had pre-booked platform assistance from First Capital Connect.

Company spokesman Roger Perkins said he had apologised to Mr Dilley and that his treatment was "not acceptable".

Mr Dilley had booked assistance to help him change trains at Cambridge while travelling on Thursday.

He said that as he was calling out for help "members of the public thought [the employee] was walking up to help me, but he blanked me and walked straight past".

He called the man, who was described to him as in "full First Capital Connect uniform", back to help.

"He said, 'Yeah well, I'm not allowed to get involved' so I said, 'Well you're allowed to talk to me surely because it's rude not to - and you can certainly ask another member of staff to help'," Mr Dilley said.

"If you do get a blind person, with a guide dog, calling out for a member of staff, who doesn't know there's a fully uniformed member of First Capital Connect staff [there], that is absolutely disgusting."

Mr Perkins said: "We were pretty much appalled. This sort of behaviour from anyone in our employment is just not acceptable."

He said the employee was "a member of our cleaning staff, employed through an agency" and the company would be "talking to them quite sternly".

In addition, further training will be given.

Mr Dilley said usually he found the company helpful and it "had done the right thing in addressing this incident".
