Una Crown's Wisbech murder: New leads after appeal

Officers investigating the murder of an 86-year-old Cambridgeshire woman say they are following "a number of leads" after an appeal for information.

The body of Una Crown was found at her home in Magazine Lane, Wisbech, on 13 January. She had been stabbed to death and set on fire.

Police stopped people in the area at the weekend and said they were "encouraged" by the response.

A knife found last week in a street nearby is still being examined.

Mrs Crown was last seen on 11 January, but spoke to a friend by telephone at about 17:00 GMT the following day.

'Memory-jogging'

Her body was found at 10:45 GMT on 13 January.

She had been stabbed in the neck and chest. Police believe Mrs Crown, a widow, was then set alight in an attempt to destroy evidence.

One week after her body was found, officers from Cambridgeshire Police carried out a "memory-jogging" exercise, stopping pedestrians, motorists and cyclists in Magazine Lane.

Det Ch Insp Jon Hutchinson said: "We have received some useful information and have a number of leads that we are now following up.

"This was a brutal murder of a defenceless elderly woman in her own home. I would urge people with any information which may help us find who is responsible, to call police."

A forensic examination of Mrs Crown's home continues.
