Ambulance procedure investigated after crew delayed

Paramedics responding to a 999 call were held up because they had an incorrect code to access Cambridgeshire's guided busway tracks.

The ambulance service said it had failed to give an updated code to one of its teams who were called to a cycle accident on Saturday.

A council spokesman said the correct codes to lower access bollards were given to the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAS) in July.

The EEAS said it was investigating.

Members of a local running club discovered the man, in his 50s, on Saturday afternoon and gave first aid while waiting for the ambulance.

Bollards are installed along the route to prevent cars and other vehicles from accidentally driving along the concrete tracks that guide the buses.

A member of the busway team "arrived within minutes" to assist the ambulance crew, the council said.

The injured man was treated at the scene and transferred by Magpas air ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital.

A spokesman for EEAS said: "It appears that one code of several used on the busway that had changed, had not been passed on via the standard ambulance service procedure to all the relevant personnel.

"The updated code has now been fully disseminated and we will of course be looking into this further to ensure the situation does not recur."

The spokesman confirmed the ambulance crew reached the injured man "in less than 10 minutes after the initial call was made".
