Legionella bug shuts Newark Hill Primary for second week

A primary school in Peterborough is to remain closed for a second week after legionella was found in a water system.

The bacteria, which can cause the potentially fatal Legionnaires' disease, was found at Newark Hill School.

Peterborough City Council expected it to reopen on Monday after workers carried out chlorination of the system to kill the bacteria.

However, it said tests would not be complete until the end of the week.

The bacteria was discovered in the school's water system during routine tests and the decision was taken to close it as a "precaution".

The council said routine tests were carried out at all schools in the area on a monthly basis.

Pupils who were due to return on 5 September are being sent homework by email.
