Fire expected to burn for three days at Boardcraft

A blaze at a wood products firm is expected to burn for up to three days, Cambridgeshire fire service said.

Crews were called to Boardcraft on Howard Road in Eaton Socon near St Neots at 09:40 BST on Monday.

A spokeswoman said gas cylinders in one building had hampered the start of operations to tackle the flames but they were quickly removed.

A firefighter taken to hospital with heat exhaustion, as crews tackled the blaze, has been released.

Water from an aerial ladder directed into the heart of the building, where there is a deep seated fire, is being deflected by wood pieces and not reaching the flames, the spokeswoman said.

She added that it was likely the blaze could burn for three days and that a special vehicle had gone into the building to observe the fire and help crews direct their efforts.

The fire is under control, electricity has been restored to surrounding premises and an exclusion cordon imposed because of the gas cylinders has been lifted, she said.

Boardcraft is a leading manufacturer of wood products for building and DIY.

An investigation in to the cause of the fire will start later.
