The closure of a South Gloucestershire school which has been in special measures, has been delayed by a year.

The Grange School and Sports College in Warmley, had been due to close in August 2016.

South Gloucestershire Council said a consultation exercise on its future had been paused "based on legal advice".

A spokesman said it will be speaking to parents over the school's future and any decision will not be made until the results of a new consultation.

'Unforeseen circumstances'

"In January, councillors agreed to launch a consultation on the closure of The Grange School and Sports College," a council spokesman said.

"The consultation period began on 31 January, however due to unforeseen circumstances we had to pause this original consultation based on legal advice that we received.

"This is a pause rather than a full cancellation. We still intend to consult with parents over the school's future and a new consultation will be launched over the coming months.

"Any decisions with regards to the future of the school will not be made until this consultation has closed and the results have been analysed," he added.

Grange School and Sports College is a mixed-sex school which has some 800 pupils aged between 11 and 18.
