A woman, aged in her thirties, has been raped in the Southville area of Bristol, police said.

She was walking to work at 05:30 BST on Thursday when she was grabbed from behind by a man and pulled into an alleyway off Dean Lane.

The man has been described by police as medium build and wearing a hooded top with a scarf across his face.

Avon and Somerset Police said the woman had "been through a terrible ordeal" and they were appealing for help.

"I would like to reassure residents that we are carrying out a full and thorough investigation and have dedicated officers carrying out a number of inquiries," said Det Insp Mike Buck.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the force as soon as possible.
