Portishead PC speed points trial jury discharged

The jury in the trial of a police officer from Portishead who allegedly accepted speeding points for his girlfriend has been discharged.

PC Alex Owen, 31, wrongly claimed to have been driving Nina East's car after she was caught in a speed check, Gloucester Crown Court heard.

The couple, who both work for Avon and Somerset Police, denied conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

They maintained they had made an honest mistake about who had been driving.

It is alleged PC Owen said he was driving 34-year-old Ms East's car to prevent her losing her licence.

Police are to discuss with the CPS whether to seek a retrial.
