Twenty-eight arrests have been made in early morning raids targeting people suspected of involvement in disorder during a Bristol derby football match.

Three officers were injured when rival fans invaded the pitch at the end of last month's Bristol City v Bristol Rovers Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie.

The raids took place in Bristol, the Bath area and North Somerset.

Police said they had now made 60 arrests in total since the match on 4 September.

A force spokesman said pictures obtained from CCTV footage and mobile phones had been published on the police website and in local newspapers.

'Powerful message'

"About half those featured came forward which resulted in further arrests," he said.

"Additionally some people we wanted to arrest contacted us to say they would hand themselves into their police station.

"This operation sends out a powerful message to a small minority intent on causing problems at football games.

"Successful convictions should result in football banning orders which will mean they will no longer be able to attend games or follow their national side abroad."

The match at Ashton Gate was the first competitive derby between City and Rovers in seven years.

Mounted police and officers in riot gear were used to keep fans apart but 19 people were arrested at the time.
