Work has started on a £70m distribution centre at Avonmouth, near Bristol, for the supermarket chain Asda.

It replaces the store's existing chilled and frozen products warehouse on the Portside site and is expected to open later this year.

Once operational the base will service 123 stores and have the capability to pack about three million cases per week at busy times.

A company spokesman said it also would help to service a number of new stores.
