Horsemeat scandal: Bristol factory restarts production

Greencore in Bristol The horsemeat was found in a bolognese sauce made by Greencore for the Asda supermarket chain

Production has restarted at a Bristol factory where horse DNA was detected in one of its meat sauces which was being supplied to Asda.

Greencore's Bradley Stoke site was closed over the weekend so that a deep clean could be carried out.

The Dublin-based firm confirmed that DNA tests on all of its other products came back negative.

The Bristol factory employs around 200 staff and is one of 23 facilities that Greencore runs across the UK and US.

Greencore announced it had launched a "thorough and comprehensive" investigation into how Asda's Chosen By You 350g Beef Bolognese Sauce came to show 4.8% of equine DNA.

Asda took the product off its shelves last week. It temporarily withdrew other Greencore products as a precautionary measure.

Greencore's Bristol factory specialises in chilled soups and sauces. It also makes sandwiches and prepared meals for the UK's biggest supermarket chains.

According to the food maker, the meat contained in its products is supplied by regularly audited companies, which say they use approved suppliers.

The company said Asda was supportive of its plans to implement additional species screening procedures to avoid further contamination.

Shares in the company, which had a £1.1bn turnover in its last financial year, fell last week after it confirmed it had supplied the contaminated sauce.
