A woman has died in a house fire in Bristol despite "valiant attempts" by neighbours to reach her.

Firefighters were called to the property on Warrington Road in Brislington at 19:20 GMT on Sunday.

Denis McCann from Avon Fire and Rescue Service said smoke from the fire, which is not thought to be suspicious, prevented them from getting inside.

The woman, described by crews as elderly, died at the scene after attempts to resuscitate her failed.

Mr McCann said: "They made valiant attempts to save the lady but they were beaten back by the smoke from the fire - they should be commended for their efforts in trying to save the lady."
