A 20-year-old woman has died following a crash on the M4 between Bristol and Bath.

Police said the victim, from the Bath area, was initially in a car involved in a collision but then got out of the Volkswagen Polo and was hit by a number of vehicles.

Specialist teams have been at the scene investigating the incident which happened just before 01:30 BST.

The M4 was closed westbound between junctions 18 and 19 until midday.

The Highways Agency said normal traffic conditions were expected from about 12:30 BST.

Avon and Somerset Police said the incident happened close to where the M4 joins the M32.

Officers appealed for witnesses and said they were particularly keen to speak to anyone driving in the area at the time of the incident who saw a vehicle lose control and leave the road.
