A mentally ill man with a violent history has admitted killing a man with a samurai sword in Bristol.

Marc Carter attacked fellow resident Gino Nelmes at a care home in March, Bristol Crown Court was told.

Carter, 46, of Filton Avenue, Bristol, had recently been released from Fromeside secure hospital run by the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Trust.

He pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

'Tragic case'

It was revealed in court that Carter had been allowed back into the community despite a long history of assaults and woundings.

The court also heard he had numerous convictions for attacks and assaults, including one on a police officer.

He has already served a nine-year sentence.

During the hearing, Ian Pringle QC, prosecuting, described it as a "tragic case", adding: "Those responsible for Carter had thought it appropriate for him to be taken back into the community."

Mr Nelmes was found lying on the lounge floor of the care home in Horfield.

The care home - or halfway house - is run by Keystones Mental Health Support Services.

Mr Nelmes had been stabbed several times by Carter with a samurai sword and one thrust had pierced his heart.

Despite the efforts of paramedics who were called to the scene, he died in hospital.

The prosecution revealed how Carter had drunk cider before the attack.

He then left and walked into Trinity Road police station and confessed. The sword was later recovered from his bedroom.

Carter is now being assessed at the Broadmoor special hospital and will be sentenced next month.
