Alert at Bristol's Cabot Circus causes traffic chaos

Emergency crews outside Cabot Circus shopping centre Police enforced a 100m cordon around the shopping centre

A security alert at Bristol's Cabot Circus shopping centre led to traffic chaos.

Officers were called at 14:00 BST to reports of a suspicious package which had been left outside a shop.

At 17:00 BST a police spokesman said the cordon had been lifted following a controlled explosion on a briefcase.

Much of central Bristol came to a standstill after a number of roads were closed around the shopping centre.

A city council spokeswoman said roads up to a mile away were affected and the nearby M32 had been "severely affected".

Bus operator, First Bus, also said a number of its services had been affected by the incident.
