A man wanted in connection with the suspected murder of a woman in Bristol has been arrested by police.

Avon and Somerset detectives made a public appeal to trace Barach Bandavad, 35, after an incident at an address in Highbury Road, Horfield.

The woman in her 50s died after being assaulted in the city, police said.

Police said they were searching for a knife which may have been used and asked for anyone who finds it not to touch it but to call them.

Mr Bandavad was found in the Southmead area of the city overnight and arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody, the force added.

Officers were called to the incident in Highbury Road at about 12:00 BST on Saturday.

Forensic examinations have been taking place at the address.

Det Ch Insp Simon Crisp, who is leading the murder investigation, said: "This was a tragic and isolated incident in which a woman has needlessly lost her life.

He added: "This investigation is ongoing and I am extremely keen to locate a knife that may have been used in this incident."

He said he was keen to speak to anyone who knew where Mr Bandavad was between midday on Saturday and 01:00 on Sunday morning.

Anyone who may have information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact officers.
